- Important: suspicious calls, spam or unexpected OTPs do not by themselves prove that a number came from a specific data breach. They are warning signals that deserve investigation.
Warning Signs to Watch
- Sudden increase in unknown calls: Be cautious when unknown callers impersonate banks, delivery companies, government officials or customer support.
- Large increase in spam SMS: Loan, investment, KYC, reward or fake-verification messages can indicate that a number is circulating in unwanted databases.
- Unexpected OTPs: An OTP for a service you did not try to access may indicate a registration, login or reset attempt.
- Password-reset notifications you did not request: Check the affected account immediately.
- Sudden loss of mobile network: Contact your telecom operator promptly; a SIM-swap attempt can potentially redirect calls and SMS.
- Scammers know personal details: Unexpected knowledge of your name, address, employer or financial context can make social engineering more convincing.
What You Should Do
- Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, passwords or CVVs.
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable MFA.
- Prefer authenticator-based MFA where supported.
- Review important accounts for unknown login activity.
- Contact your telecom provider if your SIM suddenly loses service.
- Do not click links received from unknown numbers.
- Be careful about sharing your mobile number publicly.
- Monitor bank and UPI transactions regularly.
